This method of refining is very useful for the removal of impurities from semi - conductors like Ge, Ga, Si, As, B, In, etc.. Also, it is useful for the refining of the metals of high purity.

Zone refining is based on the profitable principle that impurities are more soluble in melt than in solid state of metal. A mobile heater is fixed on end of rod of impure metal and is moved slowly towards the other end. After repeating the process several times one end of rod gets rich in impurities and then later is cut away.
It is used for refining of silicon, germanium, gallium, indium, thallium.
