DEAR BILLI
An electron pair in a metal d orbital is donated to the empty pi-star on the carbonyl compound . 
this phenomenon are also called as back bonding . 
when metal will donate the free electrons to the ligands to form the bonds , these ligand will gng to accept that electrons . 
only defination are sufficient for your level . 
for identification , just remember it have must a vacant orbital to accept the electrons .
