quantum mechanics tells that matter also have propertiues associated with waves acc to this theory , its impossible to know the exact position and momentum of an electron at the same time , its known as uncertanity principle . 
the quantum mechanical model uses complex shape of orbitals , volume of space in which there will be likely an electron , 
so, this model is based on probability rather than certainity . 
after that the 4 quantum number have been introduced
