A spontaneous reaction is that reaction which occurs spontaneously and supports formation of product at the given condition. The ultimate criteria for a reaction to be spontaneous is that the Gibbs free energy change should be negative (for irreversible reach) or 0 (for reversible reach). A nonspontaneous reaction can be made spontaneous at a given temp. and pressure by coupling.Mathematically , from statistical thermo. delta(G)system= -{delta(S)universe }TSince entropy of universe tends to increase therefore free energy change has to be negative for a reaction to occur
