According to Arrhenius ,acid is a substance that ionizes in aqueous solution to produce hydrogen ions (which are protons), H +.Both hydrochloric acid as well as acetic acid are acids, however they differ in their strength. The strength of an acid is determined by the extent of its ionization in aqueous solution.According to this acids atre of two types-
1).Strong acids- Like hydrochloric acid which is an strong acid as it ionized in aqueous solution 100 percent to give H+ and Cl- ions.
2)Weak acid--Weak acids are those acids which ionized to some extent but not completely. So there is an equilibrium established between their ionized and unionized part. For ex- acetic acid is an weak acid and ionized about less than 5 percent. So we can observe an equilibrium between its ionised as well as unionised part.
So dil.HCl is stronger than highly conc.CH3COOH acid.
