Diastereomers are stereoisomers of a compound that have different configurations at one or more (but not all) of the equivalent stereocenters and are not mirror images of each other. They are simply stereoisomers which aren't eneatiomers. The main difference, in short, lies in enantiomers being non-superimposable mirror images of each other, hence showing optical acitivity.
