Cobalt(II) is very stable in aqueous solutions but gets easily oxidised in the presence of strong ligands.

Answer ::

Co2+ ion is easily oxidised to Co3+ ion in presence of a strong ligand because of its higher crystal field energy which causes pairing of electrons to give inner orbital complexes (d2sp3).
