reduction: KMnO4 with Mn+2 's takes 5 e- --> Mn+2 

balances electrons as: 
5 (NO2)-1 loses 10 e- --> 5 (NO3)- 
2 KMnO4 takes 10 e- --> 2 Mn+2 

giving us: 
H+ & 2 KMnO4 & 5 (NO2)-1 --> 2 K+ & 2 Mn+2 & H2O & 5 (NO3)- 

balancing O's:
