Yes, it can be said that resonating structures are just the ways of representing the same molecule. It is for molecules which can be represented by more than one structure. All the resonating structures are called contributing structures or canonical forms.
For example ozone (O3) can be represented by two Lewis structures (shown as I and II). If any one of these structures is considered, one gets to know, that the O = O bond (121 pm) should be shorter than the O – O bond (148 pm). Thus, the molecule should exhibit two bond lengths. But experiments show that both the bonds are equal having bond length 126 pm which is intermediate between single and double bond.
