metal and non metals can be easily identified in a reaction . 
metals have a tendency to accept the electrons generally , but non metal lacks that . 
metals are sonorous , ductile and malleable , but non metal is generally non sonorous , and non ductile . 
metal are a good conducter of electricity and heat , but in  non metal except mercury all are not conducting heat and electricity . 
and also u can check the bonding capacity of molecule from which metal and non metal can be distinguished .

metals are bright ie losturous ,ductile,sonorus,good conductor of heat and electricityand able to donate electron to become cation.while non-metals are non lustrous,non ductile,non sonorousand bad conductor of heat and electricity. also non-metals accept electron to form anions.
