We can find the no. of lone pairs by the same formula of getting hybridization i. e . Sum of no. of electrons of all the existing elements in that particular compound. Now divide it by 2 (if sum is less than 8or equals to 8 )but by 8 if greater than 8 . Then the quotient gives the lone pairs while remainder gives the total no. of bond pair electrons present in that compound such as in CO2 sum is 4+2×6=16 ,here quotient is 2 so no.of lone pairs are 2 while no. of bondpairs are 0as remainder is 0 .Similarly in H2O the no.of lonepairs are 4.
