NH4​Clwhen dissolved in water undergoes cationic hydrolysis as follows:
NH4​Cl→NH4+​+Cl−
Ammonium ion being a strong acid takesOH−ions furnished by water as :
NH4+​+H2​O→NH4​OH(freelyionized)+H+
Thus concentration ofOH−ions decreases and that ofH+ion increases due to cationic hydrolysis and consequently the solution become acidic in nature.

Ammonium chloride is a neutral salt but its solution is slightly acidic because ammonium ion (NH4+) is a strong conjugate acid of a weak base ammonia and chloride ion (Cl−) is weak conjugate base of strong acid HCl
