Aluminium doesn't react with water but amalgamated aluminum reacts why

It is because Aluminum readily forms a oxide layer which prevents it’s from further reaction and corrosion.somehow is layer is get damaged or removed (using mercury chloride ) which can lead to the formation of amalgams.

3Hg­CI₂ + 2Al = 2Al­CI₃ + 3Hg

now this can react with water with the release of highly flammable hydrogen gas

reactions as follows,

2Al + 6H₂O = 2Al(OH)₃ + 3H₂
