Acidified KMnO4 can be decolorized by SO2.Potassium permanganate has a purple colour. Sulphur dioxide is a reducing agent. Potassium permanganate is an oxidizing agent. When sulphur dioxide reacts with potassium permanganate the solution decolourizes. colour changes from Purple to transparent(Colourless). Reason : Potassium permanganate gets reduces by sulphur dioxide.

So2 has extra unpaired electron since kmno4 is purple colour as it has a single unpaired electron
It combines and forms a stable compound which is colourless even Cl gas and CO can be used.

KMnO4 has an unpaired electron when compounds like SO2 is made to react it oxidised and it will form a colourless mixture even Cl gas and CO will produce the same effect
