it simply depends upon d principle-"like dissolves like". since water is an ionic compound, it only dissolves ionic compounds in it. While on d other hand, covalent compounds r not soluble in water.

When ionic bonds form, one atom becomes positively charged, while the other becomes negatively charged

Key Concept The properties of ionic compounds are different from the properties of covalent ... Many covalent compounds tend to be insoluble in water

Since there are no ions in a covalent compound, they don''t conduct electricity in water. 5) Covalent compounds aren''t usually very soluble in water.

There are many exceptions to this rule, just as there are many salts (ionic compounds) that don''t dissolve well in water.

Ionic Compounds. Crystalline solids (made of ions); High melting and boiling points; Conduct electricity when melted; Many soluble in water but not in nonpolar
