Flag Inorganic Chemistry> ions-of-sn...
question mark

I have read that Sn2+ is more less stable than Sn4+. Why is this so? several books say that it is due to inert pair effect. How?

THIS IS DUE TO INERT PAIR EFFECT

INERT PAIR EFFECT IS THERMODYANAMICALLY UNFAVOURED EXCITATION OF 6P ORBITAL ELECTRONS THIS IS APPLICABLE FOR OTHER ATOMS OF 6P SERIES LIKE PB ETC

THIS IS DUE TO LESS SCREENINNG ABILITY OF F ORBITAL.

Thanks
