14 KMnO4 + 4 C3H5(OH)3 --> 7 K2CO3 + 7 Mn2O3 + 5 CO2 + 16 H2O + Heat
The reaction is exothermic. The production of the flame is also accompanied by the production of intense heat, characteristic of an exothermic reaction. The reaction causes a flame to be produced, however the reaction is self catalyzing, so thic is different from other combustion type reactions and it is very difficult to utilise it as work.
Note- This reaction may become endothermic if the KMnO4 crystals are not finely grounded. If they are not, they will take much time to react and may even require heating up the mixture to start the reaction.
