Although nitration usually causes elevation of B.P.yet the nitration of resorcinol to 2-nitroresorcinol decreases their B.P. then their parent compound . Explain?

Hi vaibhav,

due to intra molecular hydrogen bonding BP decrease....where as due to inter molecular hydrogen bonding BP increase....

even though nitration causes elevation in BP...the intra molecular hydrogen bonding formed between O of NO2 and H of -OH decrease the BP....
