Dry air contains approx 78% Nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.94% argon and 0.03% carbon dioxide by volume. if atmospheric pressure is 102 kPa on a dry winters day, what pressure is caused by the oxygen molecules? I know the answer would be 21% of 102kPa, but why would it be so??

hi,

see  P depends upon the no. of molecules. as much  total moles as much P.  & total P is the sum of all the pressure exerted by all components. so they willcontribute according to there moles present . if no. of moles of one of the gase is half the total then it will contribute half of the total P . same  condition here
