How do you calculate the n factor of a substance in acidic or basic media? For eg. What is the n factor of K2Cr2O7 in acidic medium?
for acids its replaceable H+ ion( That is H+ directly attached to O), for basic its OH- ion
for salts total +ve or total -ve charge
for redox reaction it is no. of e- exchanged per mole of the cmpd of whose n factor has to be found
see for Mn and remember any form of Mn changes to Mn2+ in acidic and Cr to Cr3+
K2Cr2O7 -> Cr3+
THUS OXDATION STATE CHANGES FROM +6 TO +3
thus n factor= +6
Thanks for the answer. I still need to know how you get Mn2+ and Cr3+ in acidic medium. Also how would you know the charge of ions for different elements in different media? For e.g. Charge of Cu ion in basic media?
For acids--Its replaceable H+ ion( That is H+ directly attached to O)
For basic--Its OH- ion
For salts--total +ve or total -ve charge
For redox reaction--It is no. of e- exchanged per mole of the compound of whose n factor has to be found.
