Two blocks of masses M1 and M2 are connected with a string passing over a pulley as shown in the fig . The block M1 Lies on a horizontal surface . The coefficient of friction between the block Mand horizontal surface is μ. The system accelerates . What additional mass m should be placed on the block M1so that the system does not accelerate?

Dear student,

Since the coefficient of friction is not given for block m and M1, we will assume it to be frictionless.
Hence to stay under equilibrium, friction on bottom surface of M1, that is,\mu(M_1+m)g=M_2g
