A bar magnet is oscillating in the earths magnetic field with a period T. What happens to its period of motion, if its mass is quadrupled (a) Motion remains simple harmonic with new period = T/2. (b) Motion remains simple harmonic with new period =2T (c) Motion remains simple harmonic with new period = 4T (d) Motion remains simple harmonic and the period stays nearly constant

(a)    Motion remains simple harmonic with new period = T/2.

(b)    Motion remains simple harmonic with new period =2T

(c)    Motion remains simple harmonic with new period = 4T

(d)    Motion remains simple harmonic and the period stays nearly constant

(b)

The time period of a bar magnet in a magnetic field is given by.

Here, I = moment of inertia proportional m, M = moment of magnet,

B = magnetic field.

so, T becomes twice as mass becomes four times

Dear Student,
Please find below the solution to your problem.

Usetheformula:T=2π squareroot( I/MB )
But: I ∝ m
T′ = 2π squareroot( 4I/MB)
⇒ T′/T = 2
T′ = 2T

Thanks and Regards
