The natural frequency of water matches the frequency of microwave. This is the reason that food containing water gets cooked. The natural frequency of the plastic container does not match the frequency of microwave. So, the plastic container is not damaged

They are deflected neither by the electric field, nor by the magnetic field. However, they are capable of showing interference or diffraction. An electromagnetic wave can travel through anything - be it air, a solid material or vacuum.

Looking at the classical electromagnetic wave with E and B fields propagating perpendicularly to each other and the direction of motion. These fields do not carry charge, and it is only charge that is deflected/senses electric and magnetic fields.
