why the spectrum is not obtained in a glass slab when white light falls on it?

Because any dispersion that happened on the first side is reversed (dispersed rays again unite due) by the parallel side. You can view it by putting two prisms together (one inverted). If there is only one prism, dispersion appears but by putting an inverted prism beside the first one (Which is essentially making prism to glass slab), dispersed rays unite again to form a single ray.
