Why does the electric field inside a dielectric decrease when it is placed in an external electric field ?

The dielectric material get polarized when it is placed in an electric field. The field produced due to the polarization of the material minimize the effect of external field. Hence, the electric field inside a dielectric decreases when it is placed in an external electric field.
