A cricketer lowers his hands while catching a ball because this increases the time of catch which in turn decreases the momentum since force = (change in momentum) / (time). Therefore he needs to apply a small force to stop the ball and also the ball exerts a small force on his hands which prevents him from injury.

A cricket player lowers his hands while catching a fast moving ball because this action helps in preventing injury to the hands. As a fast moving ball has a large momentum . In stopping (or catching) the ball its momentum is reduced to zero. Now , when a player moves back his hands on catching the fast ball , then the time taken to reduce the momentum of the ball is increased . Due to more time taken to stop the ball , the rate of change of momentum of the ball is decreased and hence a small force is exerted on the hands of player. So , they do not get hurt.

While catching a ball the fielder lowers his hands increase the time contact between the ball and the hand so that less force is required to catch($it also protect his hands from hurting

Because in this way he increases the time of catch to reduce the momentum of the ball to zero. As, force = change in momentum/timeTherefore player has to apply a smaller force against the ball to stop it. The ball in turn exert a smaller force on his hand and thus the hands are not injured.

The total change in momentum of the ball is constant. Hence,if time taken by a player in bringing the ball to rest is more , rate of momemtum change will be less. Thus, the player will have to apply smmaller force and his hand will also be safe from hitting. So cricketer moves his hand backward while catching a ball.

The relative velocity of ball with respect to hand reduces and this results in lesser impact due to decreased momentum
