Amagnetic coreis a piece ofmagnetic materialwith a highmagnetic permeabilityused to confine and guidemagnetic fieldsin electrical,electromechanicaland magnetic devices such aselectromagnets,transformers,electric motors,generators,inductors, magneticrecording heads, and magnetic assemblies. It is made offerromagneticmetal such as iron, orferrimagneticcompounds such asferrites.

In all types of transformer construction, the central iron core is constructed from of a highly permeable material made from thinsilicon steellaminations. These thin laminations are assembled together to provide the required magnetic path with the minimum of magnetic losses.
