The sum of rays passing in a surface creates a wavefront. As the wavefront travel 'perpendicular' to each other. This indicate that the ray of light falling on the wavefront makes a right angle. Thus rays are indicated as 'parallel' to each other while the wavefronts are represented as perpendicular to each other.
