Dear student,
When an external force is applied on a body against some force to cause displacement, and the force has magnitude ‘almost equal’ to the given force(so that there is no change in speed of the body), the work done by the force is stored as potential energy of the system. Hence potential energy stored in body is equal to the work done by external force against some given force during a particular displacement.
