An electric line of force is the path along which a unit positive charge will move inside the electric field, if it is free to do so.
The importance of electric line of force is that the tangent at any point to it gives the direction of electric field at that point. Further, the relative closeness of the electric lines of force in different regions of an electric field provides an estimate of the strength of the electric field in those regions.
