Electrostatic shielding is a phenomenon of isolating or blocking the external electric field inside a particular region (for eg: inside a car).
It’s better to stay inside a car when lightning occurs as it acts as a shield. Because the electric field inside the car is zero and the charge is distributed over its surface. So as long as you stay inside the car, you will be safe from lightning.

Electrostatic shielding is the process of isolating a certain region of space from external field. It is based on the fact that electric field inside a conductor is zero. Electrostatic shielding is the best way to protect some area in vacuum from the influence of external electric field.
v  During a thunder accompanied by lightning, it is safer to sit inside a bus than in open ground or under a tree. The metal body of the bus provides electrostatic shielding, where the electric field is zero.
v  During lightning the electric discharge passes through the body of the bus.
Application: Microwave ovens surround energy within itself, shielding the outside from harmful radiation.
