What does the negative sign in the expression for gravitational potential energy and gravitational potential signify??

The negative sign indicates that the potential that the potential  energy is due to the gravitational attraction between the earth and the body.When the body is brought from infinity to a distance (let r) work is done by the gravitational force of attraction.As the mutual energy of the two bodies is expended, so their energy reduces by this amount.PLZ APPOVE MY ANS.
