There is a prism with refracting index equal to √2 and the refracting angle equal to 30 degree. One of the refracting surface of the prism is polished. A beam of monochromatic light will retrace its path if its angle of incidence over the first refracting surface of the prism is?? A) 0 B) 30 C) 45 D) 60

Dear Nikita

Angle A = 30°
\mu = \sqrt2
i2 = 0°
Because the retracted ray retraces its path
r2 = 0°
r1 + r2 = A
Hence
r1 = 30°

\mu = sin i1/ sin r1
\sqrt2 = sin i1/ sin r1
sin i1 = \sqrt2 * (1/2)
sin i1 = 1/\sqrt2
Hence
i1 = 45°
