Control rodsare made of neutron poisons and therefore absorb neutrons. When acontrol rodis inserted deeper into thereactor, it absorbs more neutrons than the material it displaces—often the moderator. This action results in fewer neutrons available to causefissionand reduces thereactor'spower output.
