let two bodies of mass M and m.
m is attracted towards M then
force on m is GMm/r2 i.e. equal to ma

According to me your aaproach is right .
The acceleration of a body does not depend on its own mass if it is under the influence of the other body which should be at rest . But it is dependent on the mass of other body
