Please try to understand what i am writing in the solution.
You must be knowing that the centre of mass of a system of particle moves and accelerates only under the influence of external force..
as the bodies move under the mutual attractive forces(i.e. internal forces) and hence there is no net external force.
so the centre of mass remains at rest.
now when they collide there centre of mass must be at the same position, and to make it possible the only choice is that they will collide at the centre of mass.
calculate the centre of mass position initially and that will be the place where they collide
