                     The earth -moon system rotates about the common centre of mass. The mass of the earth is about 81 times that of the moon. Hence the centre of mass of the earth-moon system is relatively close to the earth. The gravitational attraction of the sun is an external force that acts on the earth-moon system. The centre of mass of the earth-moon system moves in an elliptical path around the sun.
