Newton's first Law of Motion is inertia, that an object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. Same for an object in motion. Take sitting in a car. When you are driving, your body is in motion with the car, since you are moving down the street. If you stop abruptly, the car stops, but your body jerks forward because nothing is there to stop it. When you run into the steering wheel, however, your body stops, because that force of the steering wheel caused it to stop.

This is the reason people wear seat belts as I'm sure you know; your body will fly out the window if the car is stopped abruptly and there is no force (the seat belt in this case) to keep your body from flying forward.
