The idea was conceived byJames clerk Maxwellin his 1861 paperon physics line of force, Part IIIin connection with the displacement of electric particles in adielectricmedium. Maxwell added displacement current to theelectric currentterm inAmpere’s circuital law. In his 1865 paperA Dynamical theory of the electromagnetic fieldMaxwell used this amended version ofAmpere’s circuital lawto derive the electromagnetic wave equation.
