30 metres will be the answer as he goes 40m up and 40m down afterwards that means he will be on the same line as starting point and he moved 30m east so the answer comes out to be 30m.

The answer is 70m west, you see the thing is the man walks 40m north from his start point and then proceeds 70m east and then 40m south. Try to imagine this or even better you could visualise the situation by drawing a diagram, the three vectors for displacement form an incomplete rectangle which is completed by adding the 70 west vector which becomes your final displacement.
