one end of a 10cm long silk thread is fixed to a large vertical surface of a charged nonconducting plate and the other end is fastened to a small ball having a mass of 10g and a charge of 4 x 10topower-6. In equilibrium , the thread make angle of 60°with vertical. Find surface charge density

To left side consider a non conducting plate with a silk thread attached at the centre. To the right side consider a ball fastened with same silk thread and makes 60 degree with vertical. 
 
At the position where the ball is,  draw downward vertical component and horizontal component. 
 
Therefore. TanΦ = qE / mg . E= Sigma/ 2€0
The answer is  7.5*10^-7 C/m^2
