Paper and cardboard are recycled the same way.

First, any large non-paper items, such as plastic bags and aluminum foil, are removed by hand from the waste paper at the recycling plant. The paper is then mixed with hot water and mashed into pulp in a machine that works much like a large kitchen blender. The watery pulp is forced through a screen and filtered to remove any solid objects. Ink and other impurities separate from the paper fibers and float to the surface, where they are skimmed off. The cleansed pulp is then mixed with new wood fibers to be made into paper or card again.

A:

  1. Collected paper is sorted and baled at a recycling center.

  2. It is taken to a paper mill where it is pulped, that is, water is added and it is turned into a slush (like when you make papier maché).

  3. Metal paper clips etc are removed by screening and filtering.

  4. The ink is removed (de-inking process).

  5. The pulp is drained of water and dried.

  6. Lastly it is squeezed through rollers to produce rolls of new paper or cardboard packaging, depending on the original quality.

  • This whole process takes less than an hour.

  • There are 40,000 pieces of A4 paper in one tonne.

  • Recycling one tonne of paper saves 31,700 liters of water.

  • Australians use 3.5 million tonnes of paper every year, and less than half of this is recycled afterwards.

  • Recycling paper is achieved by sorting paper by grade, and removing contaminates from these sorted piles. Once this is done, they send the paper back to a paper factory to be re-used. Generally, they''ll use a shredded fiber to re-construct the paper in the recycling process.
