Q A stone is dropped from a balloon going up with a uniform vel. of 5 m/s. If the balloon was 60 m high when the stone was dropped, find its height when the stone hits the ground? (g=10 m/s 2 ) Please explain by taking the position of dopping the stone as origin and why the sign of acc. or vel. will be -ve?

u know why acc. and velocity are taken -ve or +ve?

if the velocity (at present)is opp. to the acc.,then either one is +ve nd the other one is -ve.

here in ur case, the vel of stone will be same as of the balloon(5 upwards).however the acc. is g downwards and disp.is also downwards.hence in the s=ut+1/2at^2,the disp, acc can be taken as +ve nd vel can be taken as -ve <or vice-versa>.u will get ur answer.

jst calculate time taken to reach the ground and in the same time, find the distance travelled by balloon+60.
