what is the need of third pin in a plug/

The third pin in the plug is the Earth pin. It is connected to the Earth which has a low resistance. When a short circuit happens in the device, the excess current flows through the Earth, back to the source in a low resistance path and trips the breaker, or opens a fuse, thereby removing the load from the supply.
