The DC series motor can run on both AC &DC supply .It is also called as an Universal motor.
When an AC supply is given to An DC motor ,the direction of current changes for every half cycle ,since in practical motors we use field winding instead of an permanent magnet,so the direction of current in field winding also changed resulting in reversal of direction of flux ..
So both flux and current reverses making the direction of rotation of motor in the same direction...
DC shunt motor may not rotate.
