The velocity of sound is the distance travelled per unit time by a sound wave as it propagates through an elastic medium. Carbon dioxide is more dense than air ( at the same temperature and pressure ), because the individual particles are on average more massive, not because they are close together. They move very slowly for a given kinetic energy. Hence the velocity of sound is minimum in carbon dioxide.

Since hydrogen has the lowest density of the three, the speed of sound will be fastest through hydrogen compared to the other two gasses. The speed of sound will be the slowest through carbon dioxide as its density of the three is the highest.
