Grade 11,

Amount of oxalic acid present in a solution can be determined by its titration with KMnO4solution in the presence of H2SO4. The titration gives unsatisfactory result when carried out in the presence of HCl, because HCl i. reduces permanganate to Mn2+. ii. oxidises oxalic acid to carbon dioxide and water. iii. gets oxidised by oxalic acid to chlorine. iv. furnishes H+ ions in addition to those from oxalic acid.

Stamement (i) is correct since the standard reduction potential of MnO4- Mn2+ H+ I Pt is larger than that of Cl- I Cl2(gas) I Pt. Thus Cl- is oxidized to Cl2 while MnO4- is reduced to Mn2+
