We know, a piece of copper is a metal while that of germanium is a semiconducting material. For metals resistance increases with increase intemperature. The semiconductor has a negative temperature coefficient of resistance. Hence, when it is cooled its resistance increases.

The resistance of a metal decreases with the decrease in temperature, whereas, in case of a semiconducting material resistance increases with decreases in temperature.

Therefore, when cooled, resistance of copper decreases and resistance of germanium increases.
