Three charges Q1 Q2 and q are placed on a straight line such that q is somewhere between Q1 and Q2. If this system is in equilibrium, what should be the magnitude of charge on q?

Here the thing you have to do is calculata the net force on each of the three chargesand equate them to zero,since the system is in equilibrium.
You will get three equations which you have to solve.
Instead of this lengthy method, it is easier to remember it as a formula.
The answer is Q_{1}Q_{2}/(\sqrt{Q_{1}+}\sqrt{Q_2})^{2}
