The easiest way to do this is to consider two points A, B in a uniform electric field E, such that the path from A to B is not along a line of force, and calculate the work done while moving a charge q from A to B in two different ways. See Resnick Halliday or any text book for the calculations. The electric field is a conservative field, which means that the path integral of F.dl or q E.dl from a point A to another point B is independent of the path.
